Transferring a Domain Name

Transferring a domain name from one registrar to another involves several steps. Each registrar may have slightly different processes, but the general steps are as follows:

  1. Verify eligibility: Check that your domain is eligible for transfer. Typically, domains must be at least 60 days old and not be in a locked or pending status. Ensure that the domain is not expired, and no transfers have occurred within the last 60 days.
  2. Prepare the domain for transfer: a. Unlock the domain: Log in to your current registrar’s account and unlock your domain. This allows the new registrar to initiate the transfer. b. Disable privacy protection: If you have privacy protection enabled for your domain, disable it temporarily. This ensures that the new registrar can verify your contact information.
  3. Obtain the Auth/EPP code: Request the Auth/EPP code (Authorization/Extensible Provisioning Protocol) from your current registrar. This unique code is required by the new registrar to confirm the domain transfer. The code is typically sent to the domain’s registrant email address.
  4. Initiate the transfer at the new registrar: Sign up or log in to your account at the new registrar. Locate the domain transfer option and follow their specific instructions. You will be prompted to enter the Auth/EPP code you received from your current registrar.
  5. Confirm the transfer: The new registrar will send a confirmation email to the registrant email address. Follow the instructions in the email to confirm the transfer. It’s crucial to do this promptly, as the transfer may be canceled if not confirmed within a specified time frame.
  6. Wait for the transfer to complete: Domain transfers typically take 5 to 7 days to complete, depending on the registrars involved. Your domain will remain active during the transfer process.
  7. Finalize the transfer: Once the transfer is complete, you may need to log in to your new registrar’s account to manage the domain settings. Ensure that the domain is locked to prevent unauthorized transfers and enable privacy protection if desired.

Note: It’s essential to maintain up-to-date contact information with your registrar to receive important notifications related to your domain. Always back up any website files and emails before initiating a domain transfer, as some registrars may not transfer these during the process.
